I have the special habit to place the task-list auto-hiding at the left side. To set it up in an advanced manner, the gconf-editor is the tool of best choice. Searching for “bottom_panel_screen0″ it can be set up quickly and easily.
My settings:
hide_delay: 100
size: 450
unhide_delay: 150
